Answer to Question 1

B
Feedback:
The mechanical soft diet, or dental soft diet, is used for the person who has difficulty chewing or swallowing, such as a client who is edentulous (without teeth), has oral problems, or has had a cerebrovascular accident. It is also a nutritionally adequate diet, and meats, fruits, and vegetables may be chopped, ground, or pureed, depending on the client's ability to chew and swallow. Clear liquid and full liquid diets are prescribed after surgery as a person's first step toward taking solid foods. They may be used during an acute illness or for certain body disturbances, such as irritation of the intestinal tract. One form of soft diet is the digestive soft diet. It is a nutritionally adequate diet that is low in fiber, connective tissue, and fat. Gas-forming foods are eliminated and mild seasonings are used.

Answer to Question 2

A
Feedback:
The progression of diets should be as follows: clear liquid, full liquid, soft, regular diet. A client's diet should progress as soon as possible to ensure an adequate nutritional intake and to increase the client's sense of well-being.
