Assessment of patient learning is a required element of patient education. However, shorter patient stays make this step challenging, and we tend to evaluate learning immediately after teaching.

However, this may not be the most accurate time for evaluation of learning. Choose the statement that best explains why. a. It takes time to truly incorporate what is learned, so immediate evaluation is not as accurate.
  b. The nurse will not have time to evaluate immediately after teaching.
  c. The patient will be too tired to participate in the evaluation.
  d. That would be too much information at one time.

Question 2

Readiness to learn is likely to be affected by any of the following conditions except:

  a. The patient's family has not yet arrived to participate.
  b. The patient is a nurse who works in another specialty.
  c. The patient is in a semi-private room with a roommate with many visitors at the bedside.
  d. The patient has just been informed of his life-changing diagnosis.

Answer to Question 1

A
For learning to have occurred, the patient must incorporate the learned behavior into his or her life. Assessment of the patient's learning is often completed at the time the teaching is done, yet in reality an assessment done a day or two later may be a better indicator of the retention and in-corporation of new information or behavior changes.

Answer to Question 2

B
Although the patient may be a nurse already, this should have little bearing on whether he or she is ready to learn.
