A keloid is formed when an abnormal deposit of collagen collects in a healing skin wound. Keloids can be a problem because they may require grafting after excision.

The tangential excision procedure involves excising burned tissue until normal dermal tissue is reached below the depth of the wound. The wound is usually covered with a split-thickness autograft. Early excision and grafting can reduce mortality and septic complications.
