A culdoscope is introduced into the peritoneal cavity via the posterior vaginal fornix and pouch of Douglas. Some gynecologists prefer culdoscopy to investigate ovaries or posterior surfaces in the lower pelvis.

The perineum is the diamond shaped tissue between the vagina and the anus. It consists of the perineal body and perineal musculature. It forms the base of the pelvic floor and supports the posterior vaginal wall with help of fibers from six converging muscles.
