Skin cannot be sterilized. Skin is a potential source of contamination in every invasive procedure. Mechanical washing and chemical asepsis are used to remove or inactivate transient and resident flora from skin around the surgical site. Gloved hands do not touch the skin and then touch deeper tissues.
