Antibiotic prophylaxis is commonly used for procedures associated with brief exposure to possible infection, for procedures not frequently associated with infection but when occurrence would have disastrous or life-threatening consequences, or for intraoperative irrigation to minimize bacterial colonization. It can be given while waiting for culture results.
