A first assistant helps maintain visibility of the surgical site, controls bleeding, closes wounds, and applies dressings and also assists with other surgical duties at the sterile field.

The scrub person must remain sterile and establishes and maintains the safety, integrity, and efficiency of the sterile field throughout the procedure.
