(a) Guinea pigs originated in South America 3,000 years ago, and they were originally bred for meat.
(b) Another name for a guinea pig is a cavy.
(c) It is suggested that the guinea pig got its name from the Latin scientific name (C. porcellus means little pig).
Guinea pigs make low grunts, squeals, and have fat bellies like pigs. After obtaining some guinea pigs, Dutch
and English traders stopped off in Guinea on their way to Europe. The first guinea pigs were sold in England
for an English coin called a guinea. Guinea comes from the Portuguese word guinewhich means far away
and unknown land.
