Psittaciformes are the parrots and related species; the order consists of only one family, Psittacidae, and
six subfamilies. All members of this order have similar hooked bills and peculiar mallet-shaped tongues.
The hooked bills are powerful and are used to obtain food and as weapons against enemies. These birds have
strong, heavy legs and feet that are used in climbing through trees. The hooked bill can also be used in climbing.
Most species have harsh voices and the ability to mimic.
Piciformes consist of woodpeckers and related birds. There are six families in the order. Most species in
this order are strictly arboreal, rarely descending to the ground. They feed on fruits, vegetation, and insects.
Only the toucans are kept as pets.

Passeriformes include the perching birds. There are 65 families in the order. Perching birds have three toes
that point forward and one toe that points backward; the toes are not webbed. Perching birds are also noted
for their pleasing songs.
