Answer to Question 1

The following protocol should be performed on the neonate immediately post delivery:
a. Clear airway. Remove fluid from nose and mouth.
b. Determine pulse and respiration rate.
c. Confirm there is no hemorrhaging from umbilicus.
d. Examine mucous membranes and determine capillary refill time.
e. Assist mother with drying neonate if warranted.
f. Ensure that colostrum is consumed.

Answer to Question 2

Confirmation of tube placement in neonatal animals requires palpation. To confirm tube
placement, palpate the left cranial one-third of the neck approximately 4 inches from the
mandible. As it is easiest to palpate the tube end when it is in motion, the technician can
palpate while gently moving the tube up and down.
