Other disadvantages of St. John's wort include that it may be less effective than prescription drug therapy or cognitive therapy. In addition, drug interactions can occur and may be significant.

Clients taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors should avoid meperidine (Demerol). Other medications to avoid include tricyclic antidepressants, Prozac, amphetamines, and amphetamine-like medications including all sympathomimetics.
