Data from Aikens' study indicated that increasing patient/client acuity levels has made the work lives of nurses more difficult. Another factor included was the increase in nurse-to-patient ratios. These factors contribute to nurse burnout.

The NIMH requested input from consumers, family members, and health professionals on a method to address the needs of individuals who had been discharged from large state hospitals and returned to their communities.
