Once fertilized, how does the egg prevent any further sperm from penetrating the zona pellucida?
 
  a. The zona pellucida becomes less viscous so that the surface receptors, which normally bind sperm, are no longer functional.
  b. The zona pellucida fuses with the first sperm's acrosome, and thus the surface receptors responsible for binding sperm become internalized.
  c. The zona pellucida disintegrates, and thus the sperm no long have surface receptors to bind to.
  d. The zona pellucida hardens and destroys the surface receptors that bind sperm.
