The honeymoon stage in an abusive relationship is characterized by kindly, loving behaviors toward the abused spouse when the perpetrator feels remorseful. Once in this stage, the motivation to leave is reduced because the victim accepts the perpetrator's promises not to repeat the abuse. The most dangerous time in an abusive relationship is when the victim attempts to leave, challenging the perpetrator's efforts to control her. Financial and emotional dependence may leave the victim feeling that she has no other option than to stay. Most victims of partner abuse come to desire to leave but cannot immediately overcome the perceived obstacles to doing so. At some point, any positives the perpetrator might possess are outweighed by the horror and consequences of the abuse.
