Cognitive changes which that occur with delirium are sudden in nature. A client with dementia may attempt to hide cognitive changes in the early stages, and they are able to perform ADLs in the early stage as well. Clients suffering from depression often display apathy or a flat affect.

The following factors have negative effects on the mourning process: high dependency on the deceased, ambivalence toward the deceased, a poor or absent support system, a high number of past losses or other recent losses, poor physical or mental health, and young age of the deceased. Data do not support the other options.
