Answer to Question 1

A, C, E
MAOIs reduce the metabolism of tyramine and can lead to toxic levels of tyramine, which in turn can cause life-threatening hypertensive crises. Sausages, aged meats, figs, and bananas contain higher levels of tyramine and should be avoided (or at least consumed cautiously and in small amounts). Over-the-counter medicines may contain vasopressor agents or tyramine, substances that must be avoided when taking MAOI antidepressants. Medications for colds, allergies, or congestion or any preparation that contains ephedrine, phenylephrine, or phenylpropanolamine may precipitate a hypertensive crisis. MAOI antidepressant therapy does not involve a need for specific shoe or stocking types. Chinese dishes often contain fermented soy products, which are high in tyramine. There are no special dietary sodium requirements related to MAOIs, as there are for lithium. The need for potassium is not increased by MAOIs.

Answer to Question 2

B
The incidence of dementia increases with age. Alzheimer's dementia is the most common severe cognitive impairment in the United States. For people age 85 years or older, the risk of getting the disease (AD) approaches 50 (Small, 2010).
