A maturational (developmental) crisis results from normal life events that cause stress. Erik Erikson (1963) identified specific developmental periods when anxiety or stress normally increases and can precipitate a maturational crisis. Events for adults that might precipitate maturational crises include getting married, becoming a parent or grandparent, and retiring. A situational crisis is a response to a sudden and unavoidable traumatic event that largely affects a person's identity and roles. An adventitious crisis is an outside external event that causes trauma and disruption, usually to many people.
