The mother of a teen with an eating disorder tells the nurse, Our family is pretty well adjusted. It's hard for me to imagine what we could have done to have this happen.

The nurse can promote more complete understanding of the etiology of eating disorders by men-tioning that young women are also influenced by:
  1. The abundance of nutritious foods available
  2. The fashion industry's idealization of thinness
  3. Competition in the work place
  4. The biologic tendency to be underweight

Question 2

The parents of a child diagnosed with ADHD ask the nurse what current medications are availa-ble for their child. The nurse should list which of the following medications? (Select all that ap-ply.)

  1. Methylphenidate (Concerta)
  2. Zolpidem (Ambien)
  3. Dextroamphetamine (Adderall)
  4. Atomoxetine (Strattera)
  5. Haloperidol (Haldol)

Answer to Question 1

Women in this culture are bombarded by fashion industry and media messages equating beauty with thinness. 1. While it is true that eating disorders are less common in countries where food is not abundant, in this culture persons with eating disorders tend not to choose nutritious foods. 3. Workplace competition with men would be of greater significance than this broad statement. 4. The biologic tendency to be overweight may influence some persons.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: 1, 3, 4
Ambien is a sleeping medication and not typically used to treat ADHD. Haldol is an antipsy-chotic that is not specified for use for ADHD. The other medications are sometimes used for ADHD.
