In the morning the nurse is assigned to assist with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), monitor cli-ents in the post-ECT recovery room, lead community meeting, and make rounds from 11 to 12 to ensure client safety.
 
  In the afternoon the nurse must administer 1 PM medications, keep an appointment with a client, and be prepared to admit the next new client. To work effectively, the nurse needs:
  1. The ability to compartmentalize and block stimuli
  2. The ability to practice static prioritization
  3. Adaptability and flexibility
  4. Subjectivity

The nurse will use many different skills during this day. He or she must be adaptable and able to move from one task to another. Flexibility is called for, since changes in priorities are sure to oc-cur with an assignment such as this. Options 1, 2, and 4 are not desirable.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: 3
This direction will help the new nurse break the pattern of avoidance. Once interactions are be-gun, the nurse's anxiety will be likely to diminish. Option 1 will not reduce avoidance. Option 2 requires too many superficial contacts and gives little opportunity for the nurse to focus on a cli-ent rather than herself. Option 4 encourages the nurse to look at herself in a negative, rather than a constructive, way.
