If the plant population in a body of water is too thick, the sun can be shaded from the lower levels of the water. This results in the plants at the bottom not having enough sunlight for photosynthesis, which means that they cannot produce oxygen.

Aquarium fish are usually raised in a closed-loop system, which consists of a tank, a filtration system, and an aeration system.
