Answer to Question 1

The use of the Bt gene helps in two ways.

1 . It prevents insect damage to the crop, making it more difficult for the fungi that produce mycotoxins to enter the plant.
2 . The Bt toxins actually kill the fungus that produces the mycotoxins.

Answer to Question 2

The federal government banned the use of DDT because of evidence that it was having an adverse effect on wildlife populations, including causing reproductive problems in birds, and building up in fish through a phenomena known as bioconcentration. DDT also lasts a long time in the environment and can pass up through the food chain.
