Cocci are round, spherical-shaped bacteria that cause diseases such as some forms of pneumonia and strep infections. Bacillus bacteria are rod-shaped organisms that may be single, in pairs, or arranged in chains. They cause such serious diseases as anthrax, tetanus, blackleg, intestinal coliform, salmonella, and tuberculosis. Spirilla bacteria are shaped like spirals or corkscrews. Some of the diseases they cause are leptospirosis, vibriosis, and spirochetosis.
