Answer to Question 1

Weeds reduce the yield of cultivated crops by competing for essential resources. Weeds increase production costs during their control. Some weeds are allelopathic. Some weeds are parasitic and obtain their nutrients directly from other plants. Weeds devalue the primary crop. Weeds may contain toxins in their herbage that is harmful to livestock. Weeds compete with crops for light, water, and minerals. In annual cropping systems, effective competitors for light often have high levels of seedling vigor that allow for development of a weed canopy above the crop. The effect of weeds on crop growth and yield is typically greatest during crop establishment. Tall-growing weeds overgrow the crop and reduce the intensity and quality of the light received by the crop.
