Using the Munsell method, a surveyor matches soil to standard color chips. The system identifies each
chip with three variables:1.
Huethe color (red or yellow)
2. Valuethe lightness or darkness of the hue (denoted 0 to 10, 0 = black 10 = white)
3. Chromathe purity of the dominant color; low chroma suggests muddy colors (also denoted by
a number)
Using the Munsell system, a soil might be labeled 10YR 3/6. This soil has the hue 10YR, a yellow-red;
the value 3 (dark), and the chroma 6. Each Munsell color designation has an associated color
description; in this case, the soil is described as dark yellowish brown.
