The nonprofessional workers in the petroleum industry generally need little education or training but must have
good mechanical ability. They need to be able to read, understand, and follow directions well. Petroleum scientists,
engineers, and geologists need at least a college degree

Most jobs are rugged outdoor jobs that require working in all kinds of weather. Workers in the industry must be
prepared to move from one area to another to follow their jobs
