Answer to Question 1

The U.S. petroleum industry built a massive refining infrastructure in the 1990s and early 2000s. At the same
time, demand for gasoline in the United States declined as a result of government regulations and economic pressures.
The result is that the U.S. refining industry now imports raw petroleum, refines it, and exports the refined
products, meaning increased profits.

Answer to Question 2

Student responses can include gasoline, diesel and aviation fuel, jet fuel, heating oil, distillate oil, grease, road oils,
technical oil, medicine oil, alcohol, ammonia, ink, paint, plastic, synthetic rubber, food additives, and others.
