Ground firesgenerally smoulder below the surface of thick humus or bog.
 Surface firesinvolve shrubs, forest floor litter, small trees, and other undergrowth.
 Crown firesburn the entire tree, including the branches and leaves.

campers, railroads (less now than in earlier years), logging, lightning, children, machinery operation, and
spontaneous combustion
