Answer to Question 1

Spade the area 12 inches deep and amend the soil to that depth.

Answer to Question 2

Remove the weaker of the leaders to leave just one main leader. Remove weaker scaffold branches so that the remaining branches are spaced widely and evenly around and up and down the trunk.

Remove the weaker or more poorly positioned of the crossing branches.

Remove these vertical shoots at their point of origin leaving only the main scaffold branches

a tree with limbs that are too low

Remove one or two of these limbs per year after the tree has been planted for 3-4 years
