Answer to Question 1

Thatch is an intermingled layer of living and dead stems, leaves, and roots of grasses that develops between the actively growing vegetation and the soil surface. When thatch accumulation exceeds 1/2 inch, steps should be taken to remove portions of it. This can be accomplished by either physical removal (vertical mowing) or by encouraging thatch breakdown while discouraging thatch accumulation (aerification).
