Rationale: Breast-feeding should be initiated within 2 hours after birth and every 2 to 3 hours thereafter. Supplementation with water does not reduce hyperbilirubinemia and should be dis-couraged because supplemental feedings with water do not promote stool excretion. The infant should not be fed less frequently. It is not necessary to stop breast-feeding permanently.
