Accepting the client as is is important to therapeutic communication. A judgmental approach to any interaction will limit the ability for mutual understanding. It is essential for every nurse to remain aware of his/her own biases and to approach each client from a perspective of acceptance.

Empathy is understanding another's perception of a situation. Empowerment is encouraging another person to be responsible for oneself. Acceptance is being nonjudgmental. Advocacy is being the voice or the back up support for another person.
