HELLP syndrome is pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) with liver damage. It is characterized by hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelets (less than 100,000). Magnesium sulfate is the medication of choice. Respirations must be at least 12, urine output at least 30 cc/hour, and deep tendon reflexes normal before the client can receive the medication.
