Answer to Question 1

A
Anxiety, a subjective response that occurs when a person experiences a real or perceived threat to well-being, is closely related to stress. Anxiety can be viewed as either an activator or a response to stress; it occurs on a continuum ranging from mild apprehension to panic. Some anxiety is useful as a motivator for adaptation, but extreme anxiety levels impair a person's ability to think or to function.

Answer to Question 2

B
An acute state of disorganization or crisis occurs when a person's stressors exceed her or his coping ability. The person in a crisis state is unable to function because of extreme anxiety; this state is time-limited and requires immediate intervention to be resolved. While a crisis is unique to each individual, some common characteristics include loss, a precipitating event that is experienced as sudden and overwhelming, impaired communication, and the need for intervention because usual coping skills are inadequate for resolution. While a crisis can be a negative experience, it can also present an opportunity for growth and learning.
