Accreditation is purely voluntary. Accrediting agencies have minimum standards that must be met to receive accreditation. The Joint Commission accredits hospitals and skilled nursing facilities. The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) accredits comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation programs.
