Ideally select a cuff that is 40 of the circumference (or 20 wider than the diameter) of the midpoint of the limb being used to be obtain measurements. The bladder, enclosed by the cuff, encircles at least 80 of the arm of an adult and the entire arm of a child. A cuff that is wrapped too loosely or unevenly will yield false-high readings.
