PN is gradually increased over several days. To prevent infection, the bag and tubing are changed every 24 hours. Laboratory values are monitored regularly.

Patients are admitted to hospitals or agencies in unresponsive or confused states. Remove contact lenses, and rinse lenses and eyes with a sterile saline solution.
