Massage to these areas further injures the tissue by causing breaks in the tissue capillaries. Positioning interventions reduce pressure and shear to the skin. You change the immobilized patient's position according to activ-ity level, perceptual ability, and daily routines.

An infant's PMI is usually found at the third or fourth intercostal space and is easy to palpate because of the child's thin chest wall. The PMI is sometimes difficult to find in older adults because the chest deepens in its anteroposterior diameter.
