Contraindications to digoxin use include hypersensitivity to it, uncontrolled ventricular arrhyth-mias, AV block, idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis (IHSS), constrictive pericarditis, and known alcohol intolerance.

Hypokalemia (decreased potassium level) places the patient at risk for digoxin toxicity. Evaluate digoxin levels, serum electrolytes, and hepatic function periodically throughout therapy.
