In order for the parasites to be eliminated, the patient must demonstrate adherence and dependa-bility. Careful instructions must be given for time of return visits, for submission of specimens, and for taking of drugs.

Chloroquine can result in irreversible retinopathy when used in prolonged high doses. Doses of the drug over 5 grams are usually fatal.
