Selective alpha blockers are used in the treatment of hypertension, Raynaud's disease, and symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition whereby an enlarged prostate gland causes symptoms of urinary hesitancy and retention. The alpha-blocking drugs include doxazosin (Cardura), prazosin (Minipress), terazosin (Hytrin), and alfuzosin (Uroxatral).

The most common unwanted adverse effects of alpha agonists are headache, restlessness, ex-citement, insomnia, and euphoria. Their adverse cardiovascular effects include vasoconstriction, hypertension, tachycardia, and palpitations or arrhythmias.
