  2. renal insufficiency on dialysis.
  3. no clinical or laboratory evidence of HIV infection.
  4. an allergy to purine nucleoside analogues.

A patient telephones a nurse and reports that since the patient began ribavirin therapy 6 months ago, mild fatigue has been evident. For the last week, shortness of breath has developed and progressed. Which instruction should the nurse give?
 
  1. Come to the office for a complete blood count immediately. You may have developed hemolytic anemia.
  2. This is a normal response to this medication. It should resolve spontaneously in a few days.
