Antiretroviral drugs for HAART are recommended to be taken by pregnant women who are known to be HIV positive because the virus can cross the placenta and infect the fetus. These drugs, when taken as prescribed, can reduce the chances of fetal infection from about 30 to about 8. Dosages are based on the woman's viral load, not on weight or pregnancy status.
