In your observation of a 24-hour-postoperative elderly patient you find the patient in severe pain. He tells you he does not want to take the pain medication because he fears addiction. What is the best intervention for this patient?
 
  1. Give the patient methadone.
  2. Talk to the patient about his fears.
  3. Just give the medication, and do not tell him.
