Answer to Question 1

A
A. Time all applications carefully. A person tolerates temperature extremes better when the duration of exposure is short (10 to 20 minutes). Prolonged exposure can injure tissues and eliminate the benefits of therapy.
B. Do not allow the client to adjust temperature settings. It is common for the client to adapt to a temperature extreme and then think that the temperature should be adjusted.
C. Discourage the client from moving an application. This may cause injury to an unprotected area of the body and decrease the effectiveness of therapy.
D. Never position the client so that the client cannot move away from the temperature source. This avoids the risk of injuries from temperature exposure. The hospitalized client should always have a call light within reach.
