Which is the most likely used method to compute the average commute time to work in Douglas County?
 A. Researchers collected a random sample of people in Douglas County and asked them for their commute time. They added up all of these commutes times and then divided this number by the total population of Douglas County.

C. Researchers collected a random sample of people in Douglas County who are employed and asked them for their commute time. They added up all of these commutes times and then divided this number by the number of people in the sample.

FEEDBACK:
An average is computed by adding up all the values and dividing by the number of values. Since each option considered concerns a sample, the number you divide by is the number of people in the sample--that is, the size of the sample, often denoted by n or N. The other consideration, however, is who should be in the sample. Children and people who don't work also don't commute to work. If they were considered in the sample, their commute time would be zero. When you then divided by the size of the sample, the average commute time computed with many zeroes would be lower. Thus, it's important that the sample represents those included in the statistic--specifically here, those who are employed.
