 fanciful images of a timeless Arabia through art, literature, film and popular culture . . . producing some wonderful images as well as some misleading stereotypes.
 The Arabian Nights, e.g., Aladdin and the Magic Lamp
 Western art music masterpieces inspired by the so-called Orient.
 American pop music of the 1920s and 30s with songs like Sheik of Araby
 Motion pictures such as Casablanca, Lawrence of Arabia, and (the animated) Aladdin
 Popular imagination of this vast area is also fueled by current events and news reports about the Middle East.

 Understand the routes of Arab musical traditions and. . . the roots of some of the oldest ideas, philosophies, and theories about Arab music and appreciate the historical and literary legacy of Arab music-culture . . .
