APTN (Aboriginal Public Television Network) in Canada
CARAS (Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Science) established a Juno award category for Best Music of Aboriginal Canada Recording (Changed to Aboriginal Recording of the Year in 2002).
NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts and Science) created a Grammy award category for the Best Native American Music Album.
Other industry indigenous only award institutions were formed including the Native American Music Awards (the Nammys), and Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards (the Cammys), and the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards.
New record labels were established, including Canyon Records, Indian Hose Records, and Sunshine Records.
In 1989, Tom Bee (of XIT) founded the Sound of American (SOAR), which became one of the largest and most important distributors of Native music. SOAR was responsible for the mainstreaming of Native music during this decade.
