Answer to Question 1

 Excavation is less than 71/2 feet deep.
 Excavation is benched for at least 2 feet horizontally for every 5 feet of depth.
 Minimum horizontal width at eh bottom of the excavation is no less than 2 feet or wider.
 No water, surface cracks, or other conditions that might reduce the stability of the excavation.
 No heavy equipment or machinery operating in the vicinity that might de-stabilize the excavation.
 All loose soil, equipment, and material is kept back from the edge of the excavation for a distance at least equal to the depth of the excavation.
 Number of worker in the excavation is the minimum needed to perform the work.
 Excavation work is carried out in such as way as to minimize the time spent in the excavation.

Answer to Question 2

 All electrical equipment and lines should be considered energized it has been determined from tests or inspections that they are not.
 Operating voltage of all lines and equipment must be determined before beginning work so that the safe distance set forth in Figure 11-1 can be properly maintained.
 Lines and equipment must be disconnected from their sources of energy and the connector must be locked out before work begins.
 Workers must be trained in emergency procedures and first aid.
 Drown-proofing precautions must be taken when work is done over water.
 Sufficient lighting must be provided when work is done at night or in any setting that is dark.
