Answer to Question 1

A volatile fluid is heated and vaporized in the inner pipe. Surrounding the inner pipe is an outer tube with a hard vacuum, forming an insulating layer around the inner tube. The vapor in the inner tube transfers its heat to a heat transfer fluid which moves the heat to a heat exchanger, to heat water. As the vapor cools, it condenses back to a liquid and returns to the bottom of the heat pipe.

Answer to Question 2

The efficiency of the Stirling engine is proportional to the difference in temperature between the hot and cold reservoirs. The efficiency can be measured by measuring these temperature differences.
