When a shaft has centers, the steady rest is set up:
 
  A) With the shaft between centers, the top jaw is brought down to touch the shaft, then adjust the other two jaws
  B) Turning workpieces without a center and thus reducing friction. Higher speeds can be used
  C) By adjusting the lower jaws finger tight to the shaft while the dead center is in the shaft center hole, then adjust the top jaw
  D) By turning the shaft and checking for run out with a dial indicator. The jaws are set accordingly

Question 2

You can prevent a finished shaft from being damaged by the steady rest jaws by:
 
  A) Using hardened steel jaws, oiled and adjusted frequently
  B) Keeping them good and tight and using a light oil
  C) Readjusting the top jaw when the shaft heats and expands and by using high pressure lubricant and protective material on the jaws
  D) Wrapping the shaft with abrasive cloth, abrasive side to the shaft, and by using high pressure lubricant
